Email Security

Email Security

E-mail has become an essential mode of communication in the modern world. Unfortunately, that means it's also one of the most common routes for virus infection and fraud. Protecting yourself from these kinds of threats is necessary for everyone.

Viruses

Viruses often arrive in the form of e-mail attachments, so exercise care when opening any attachment - even from a known source. Some viruses infiltrate address books and send infected e-mail to everyone listed, so it's possible to receive a virus from a friend or colleague. Ideally, you should communicate beforehand to expect an attachment.

The best protection against e-mail viruses is virus protection software that automatically scans each attachment as it arrives at your computer. Every computer connected to the Internet should have antivirus software, to protect your own system and the Internet as a whole. Some viruses start on an individual system but spread to entire networks, engulfing the equipment essential to run the Internet.

Phishing

Frauds are another security risk posed by e-mail. One type, called 'phishing', tries to trick the recipient into disclosing personal financial information or passwords. These e-mails use logos of well-known institutions like banks or online retailers and ask you to update your password or financial information.

They provide a link which looks legitimate but in reality directs you to a phony web site. Providing personal information leads to becoming the victim of credit card fraud or theft - sometimes called 'identity theft'.

Tipoffs can be gleaned from the subject line or the content. Rather than using your personal name, they may say 'Dear valued customer'. But finding some variant of your name isn't difficult these days. Beware, in either case.

A more subtle tipoff is a link which doesn't correspond to the text describing it. This can be verified by checking the status bar when you highlight the link. If the text says something like "Microsoft", but the URL is "www.somebadplace.com" you know the message is not from the folks in Redmond, Washington.

Specialized software can detect phishing, though it hasn't reached maturity - it often identifies legitimate e-mail as fraud. Always treat requests for passwords or credit card numbers with suspicion. Remember, no legitimate financial institution will ask you to verify your password or sensitive data in an e-mail.

E-mail Backups

Like any other kind of data, e-mail can (and should) be backed up. It's easy to do with most e-mail programs - simply export the messages to a folder, then backup the folder with a backup program onto a removable disk, writeable CD or DVD or other media.

Specialized backup software can be purchased at modest cost to backup e-mails directly, eliminating the export step.

Backup programs can usually be automated to occur at a convenient time without requiring further intervention. Granted, configuring them is one more thing to do in a busy schedule. But the first time you lose one that's badly needed, you'll be much busier trying to replace it if it wasn't backed up.

Data Backups - Why Bother?

Data Backups - Why Bother?

For many people, computers have become a daily necessity. We use them for work, for correspondence and for entertainment. Many of the files are important documents and losing them would cost us time and money. Backups are the best way to prevent their permanent loss.Don't make the mistake of believing that backups are only for computer geeks or large corporations, or a task that can be performed 'when I get around to it'. On the contrary, backups are a necessity for everyone. Even if your computer has been running reliably for years, it will fail one day - either through virus attack, user error or just age.On that day, one of two things will happen. You'll either suffer the grief that comes with losing financial information, passwords, music collections, personal photographs and all the software you've purchased. Or, you can repair or replace the computer and restore from the backups you've been making regularly. The latter is an annoyance, the first a disaster. There are, unfortunately, an infinite variety of ways to lose data. Besides hardware failure, computers can be destroyed in fires or floods. Hard drives can be damaged by power surges caused by lightning strikes or data lost by a child randomly hitting the keyboard. Viruses can infect systems and erase hard drives. But there's only one way to get it back - by having it available to be restored. What to Backup? For the average user, it's usually not necessary to backup every file on the computer, which would require large storage space. But at bare minimum home users should backup personal files and irreplaceable software. Spreadsheets with financial records not easily available from other sources, legal documents, work-in-progress... the list is large. But backups needn't be.The easiest way to do backups is to use the backup software that comes with the operating system. Windows has a free, usable backup program while similar ones are available for Mac, Linux and others. The software is easy to use and backing up is a simple matter of selecting which folders to backup. It even has a scheduler so backups can be automated to occur at convenient times. For a modest sum backup software can be purchased that will only backup files changed since a certain date, or since the last backup. Alternatively, new files could be copied daily to a backup folder where they can be backed-up by your backup program. To ease the task of identifying which, use the Search option to list files 'newer than X'. Once the list is complete, copy them into the backup folder and run the program for just that folder. Some data, such as e-mails are only slightly more difficult to protect. Some e-mail clients can be configured to keep copies of received and sent e-mails on the e-mail server. When that's not an option, most can export messages to a file, which can then be backed up.Backups can be done to any kind of removable media - writeable CD's/DVD's, removable hard drives or even the newer 'keychain' devices that plug into a USB port. Even floppy disks can still be used in many cases. Documents often take a small amount of space. Just set aside 7 disks and rotate them from week to week.Daily backups are one more thing to do in a busy schedule. But the day you lose that file you need and can't restore, you're going to be a whole lot busier.

Combating Viruses

Combating Viruses

Two simple precautions can help keep your computer virus free - install and use software from reliable vendors and avoid opening unexpected e-mail attachments.

Almost all e-mail attachments are potential virus carriers. Some of the most famous viruses were distributed by accessing address books of infected computers and sending e-mail (with attachments) to everyone in the address book.

Even those from known senders should be regarded with suspicion - e-mail addresses can easily be faked to appear to be from someone you know.

The 'Melissa' virus that appeared in 1999, originally posted on an Internet newsgroup, was distributed in a Microsoft Word document. When downloaded and opened the virus accessed the user's address book and sent copies of the document (along with the virus) to the first 50 people in the user's address book.

Every computer that received the virus sent out an additional 50 copies, creating a worldwide slowdown in Internet networks. The effect took only a few hours.

Another widespread virus distributed by e-mail was the 'ILOVEYOU' virus of 2000. When double clicked it sent copies of itself to every e-mail address in the infected computers address book. But far from a problem of the past, viruses are still very much with us.

What to do?

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE

Antivirus software is available in both commercial and freeware versions with a variety of features and prices, usually from free to less than $50.

Most antivirus software works by examining files as they arrive at the computer and by scanning later at configurable pre-set times. The programs work by examining each e-mail attachment and downloaded file looking for virus 'signatures'.

If a virus is found the user will be alerted and infected programs and attachments can be cleansed of the virus or, if not possible, infected files can be deleted or placed into 'quarantine' where they can't be run.

UPDATES

Whare are signatures? All programs have instructions in a pattern. Computer viruses - like their biological counterparts - come in known, though evolving, patterns. The fact of evolution is the reason virus-checking files need to be regularly updated. Updated files contain lists and the characteristics of new signatures.

Most antivirus software can be configured to alert you when the virus checking files are out of date, and even to automatically refresh signature files with the latest versions.

USER PARTICIPATION

Users can become complacent after installing antivirus software, thinking they're totally protected and don't need to worry about becoming infected.

Apart from the fact that antivirus software is written by humans, who can make errors, vendors can only react to viruses after they're created. By that time, much damage can already have been done. An e-mail attachment or program may be infected with a new type of virus that your software cannot (yet) detect.

Some antivirus software can - to a limited extent - detect virus activity even without being able to identify a particular virus. This is an extra level of protection against the latest viruses, but still shouldn't allow users to become overconfident.

Always use trusted sources for downloading software and treat every e-mail attachment with caution.

OTHER INFECTION ROUTES

Lastly, a special note about CDs and DVDs. While they can't be written to (those that can are called CD-R's, DVD-R/W or some variation), they can still contain viruses. Users who burn their own CDs or DVDs - inexpensive and easy these days - can accidentally copy infected programs onto the disc. Since CDs can contain files that automatically act when the disc is inserted, it's possible - though rare - for viruses to be spread without additional user action.

Once again, the lesson is clear. Only accept material from those you know and trust, and who practice 'safe file sharing'.

Be safe out there, now.

What Is A Computer Virus, Anyway?

What Is A Computer Virus, Anyway?

Combating infections and removing viruses is now big business. Lesson one is 'knowing the enemy'.

THE ENEMY - Crackers and Hackers

Geeks make a distinction between crackers, who break into systems to do damage, and hackers who enjoy taking programs apart just to see how they tick. We'll stick with the more common, though less accurate, term of hacker. (The term 'hacker' originally meant 'someone who makes furniture' with an axe. Crude, but effective - like most computer viruses.)

Viruses are actually a particular type of computer 'malware' - a general term covering all types of malicious software. The most common types are viruses, worms and Trojan horses.

VIRUSES

A virus is usually hidden inside another program such as an installation program delivered via e-mail attachment. (Biological viruses require a host organism to live and reproduce, hence the name.) When the 'host' program is run, the virus program also runs. Once it's in memory the virus is able to do its dirty work, which usually includes infecting other programs.

After the infection stage of the virus, there's a destructive stage. The virus waits for a pre-determined trigger (such as a specific date or a certain number of times the virus has replicated itself) before delivering its 'payload'. Payloads range from simple messages to file deletion commands to destruction of the core operating system.

When first developed, computer viruses were commonly distributed on floppy disks. With the growth of the Internet downloaded files and e-mail are the preferred delivery mechanisms. E-mail can contain attachments which can be any kind of computer file. Any executable file can be infected with a virus, and shouldn't be run unless you're confident they're virus free.

WORMS

Worms are similar to viruses in that they're self-replicating. They reproduce themselves across networks without human assistance, such as e-mail sending. A worm, though, doesn't need another executable program to be distributed.

Worms usually affect networks more than individual computers on the network. Their self-replicating behavior can overload network resources, causing slowdowns in data transmission by consuming massive bandwidth normally used to forward normal traffic. Network systems that route Internet traffic are just specialized computer hardware and software. They, too, can be affected by malware.

Worms can also be designed to carry a payload, using a 'backdoor' installation program. A backdoor is a hidden access point to a computer that bypasses the normal login procedure. They're commonly used by spammers to distribute junk e-mail, for example.

TROJAN HORSES

Trojan horses are the third common type of malware. A 'trojan' is a program that pretends to do one thing but actually does something different. (The term comes from the story of the Greeks who built a large wooden horse in which to hide. Their enemies, the Trojans persuaded they'd receive a gift, took the horse inside their compound giving the Greeks easy access to wreak havoc.) Unlike viruses or worms, a Trojan doesn't replicate itself.

Trojans may be hidden in otherwise useful software. Once started they can do almost anything including erasing data, corrupting files, installing backdoors and logging keystrokes so that hackers can steal information such as credit card numbers and passwords.

FIGHTING MALWARE

Elsewhere in the series, we'll discuss what is and can be done to combat the spread of malware. In the interim, just remember not to be passive and expect the problem to be solved by others. Fighting viruses requires active participation from vendors, webmasters AND users.

The Benefits of Investing in a Wireless Warehouse Management Solution (WMS)

The Benefits of Investing in a Wireless Warehouse Management Solution (WMS)

With skyrocketing labor and logistics costs and constant pressure on margins, warehouse efficiency is a must.

Before wireless WMS came into the picture, stores received boxes of stock accompanied by paperwork detailing items in the delivery. Staff members then manually checked each box’s contents against the manifest. Using this method, store staff could not see what items should be in which box, or whether items were missing until each box had been checked. It was also difficult to tell whether all ordered boxes had been received.

How does wireless WMS solution works
Wireless warehouse solution works by linking warehouse workers to the backend application server where warehouse activities are being recorded via a wireless handheld device. The device tells employees where to go to pick, put away, count, or move product within the plant. This translates to a better control over the movement and storage of materials within the warehouse, it maximise the efficiency of the receipt and shipment of goods, optimise warehouse space utilization and know at all times exactly where goods are stored,- allowing employees to improve and maintain high customer service levels.

How would it Benefits your warehouse p icking
The wireless solution allows staff to streamline workflow. On entering employee ID, the device shows the next batch to be picked up according to priority. The system directs the picker via the wireless handheld device to the specified location and scans the product barcode to confirm the correct item has been picked in the correct quantity. In other words wireless WMS assign employees specific areas of responsibility in the warehouse.
The barcode data is entered into the WMS, including the measurements, location, number of products in a box, number of boxes on a pallet and storage conditions and provides up to minute information for picking of a single order, multiple orders for different customers.

Receiving
When items are received to be put away, the staff members scan a bar code on the box. The bar code when scanned reveals information about the box’s contents. Items from the box are scanned and results are compared so discrepancies are immediate obvious. The software then directs warehouse staff to put away items into a suitable location.
Solution also allows partial deliveries and stores can elect to receive stock carton by carton, depending on immediate needs.

Streamlining WMS workflow & prerequisites
With WMS solution, sales staff can provide accurate information to customers about stock availability; Warehouse staff can find items quickly and easily.
The WMS solution combines front and back end technology and because it is a web based solution it’s highly extensible and platform independent; all you need is a browser and a wireless handheld device to work with. WMS retrieves and stores information in the centralised database as the server; it cuts the risk of data synchronization errors and eliminates duplicate entries.

The WMS is aid to offer greater efficiency and accuracy to businesses, through increased pick rates, decreased errors, higher compliancy, and accurate forecasting of warehouse resources and demands.

“The new system has drastically reduced the manual workload for our staff. Our staff has estimated that the productivity gains from WMS picking and receiving is around 40%,” Isotherm group logistics manager, Zahid Said.

Conferencing Calls: Always Reachable

Conferencing Calls: Always Reachable

Is there anyone who has not heard of teleconferencing, today's fast-rising manner of exchanging information between individuals located in various geographical places as well as time zones? This is more popular among agencies and firms, large and small, to facilitate quick and effective swapping of concepts. This is a lot more convenient than having to set up conferences, as well as even trainings, at a certain location with many attendees who may or may not be be there at that scheduled time and location.

Conference calling might range from a plain three-way call to a massive conference call and virtual meeting with up to countless attendees all in one place, talking and interacting with each another via a system. Numerous may find this a bit confusing or believe this might be way beyond their allocated cost. However, at close observation, you will find providers that provide reasonably priced teleconferencing services. You can make use of the World Wide Web to seek for and determine a variety of conference call costs for better comparison and you might be flabbergasted to know that some even give free teleconferencing options.

So how does teleconferencing work? This is just the process of connecting persons or teams of people by using a server called a bridge that serves as a telephone that can answer numerous calls at the same time. The teleconferencing service that could host the meeting would provide the bridge if you don't currently possess one. If you have a VoIP program, you may host your own conference call using VoIP system. If you like more interactive talk, you can maximize the use of internet technology by utilizing audio as well as video streaming with the use of webcams and headsets, IM for speedy exchange of text information, utilizing a usual whiteboard as you will in a regular face-to-face meeting, and other relevant software.

This is relatively simple if you have all the machineries as well as programs that you need and if you understand how audio and web conferencing performs. But then, if you don't want to be encumbered with all the technical terms and the real setting up of the network, you could still benefit from the advantages of teleconferencing by merely a few clicks of your mouse as well as discovering a low-cost teleconference provider in the Internet. You could either take the opportunity of uniform rate conference calling services which eliminates the hassles of having to schedule your appointments or the per-minute teleconferencing plans, whichever is more convenient for you.

With this technology, you decide whether it's audio conferencing you want, web conferencing, VoIP teleconferencing, or all three of them simultaneously. All you have to do is talk with the teleconferencing service provider of your preference and they will work it out for you. A moderator should be there to facilitate the proper flow of the appointment or conference. It is also the company's discretion whether programs for security as well as encryption should be included in the deal for the data to remain secure because this kind of conferences may easily be hacked by unauthorized persons over the internet.

Getting The Best Out Of Your Digital Camera

Getting The Best Out Of Your Digital Camera

Any digital camera has an array of functions and uses that enable the handler to take excellent pictures. However, many of the functions are not fully understood and the pictures are not of the best possible quality. Understanding these features enable the user to have complete control over their machine, and therefore get the best possible images.

Firstly the quality of the image that can be produced relies upon the resolution of the digital camera. This is made up of mega pixels. The number of mega pixels determines the level of detail in the picture. The pixels are the tiny dots of colour that make up image. These look fine on the computer or screen. However, once transferred to the computer and enlarged, images containing a lower number of pixels show these dots and so the image is flawed. Therefore, for good quality images the best digital camera to choose is one that has a high number of mega pixels.

The quality of the digital camera lens will also affect your picture quality. The lens should have a zoom feature, which enables you to zoom both in and out to create the perfect composition for your image. Each device will differ, but the concept is the same. The lens should be labeled with two zoom numbers; the smallest states the shortest possible zoom distance and the biggest number shows the longest possible distance. Consider the type of photographs that you are going to take when choosing your digital camera. If the pictures will mainly be indoors, then a lower number is required to be able to zoom out in enclosed areas.

The average digital camera will have an inbuilt auto focus function which will serve most amateur photographer`s needs. However, for more effects or for advanced photography, select a camera that has a manual focus option also. The auto focus can be turned off in some devices, which is an exceptional feature as the photographer can choose which option is best for the photograph being taken.

Another consideration is the shutter delay on the digital camera. The shutter delay affects the quality of focus and composition. The delay means that the picture is actually taken some time after the button is pressed on the camera. This means that the subject of the composition may have moved, clouds may shadow the expected lighting effects, or that your hand may shake and so the image is distorted and blurred. A good way to combat this is to only half press the button when you are composing the picture. This activates the auto focus and prepares the device for the shot. When the button is pressed, the photograph will be taken much more quickly, and will help combat any distortions.

Memory space is important if you want to take good photographs with your digital camera. Not only does this enable lots of storage, it also gives you the opportunity to take several photographs, in search of that one perfect shot.

Any digital camera will have inbuilt storage but this is minimal, averaging around 16 megabytes in total. The memory space can be added to with the use of a memory card or stick. The type chosen will depend upon what is compatible with your camera. Any memory card or stick is good, and they go up to 2GB in size. It is important that the type chosen is compatible with your home computer so that the images can be transferred and stored, giving you access to more photographic opportunities.

Notebook As Indispensable Tool For Modern Executives

Notebook As Indispensable Tool For Modern Executives

The significance of notebooks or laptops is increasingly growing in the modern life. The modern-day business has witnessed a phenomenal turn-around at the present moment. Given the hectic schedules and jam-packed daily routines, it has become virtually impossible for almost anyone to perform their activities being rooted to one particular place or work-station. The frequent movements of numerous businessmen from place to another have made them to carry a notebook or laptop in order to perform their business activities, even during traveling.

Notebook refers to a light-weight personal computer which is small in size and conveniently portable. A notebook is usually battery or AC operated personal computer smaller than a briefcase, which can be easily used and carried along in places such as airplane flights, libraries, temporary offices, and at meetings. A notebook is famously known as `Laptop` which typically weighs less than 7 pounds (3 kg) and is about 3 inches in thickness. Some renowned brands associated with the manufacturing of notebooks are IBM, Apple, Sony, Dell, Toshiba, and Hewlett-Packard among others.

One of the most remarkable differences between a notebook and personal computer is the `Display Screen` - notebook computers use a variety of technologies known as `Flat-panel technologies` to produce a light-weight and non-bulky display screen. The display screen of many notebooks is limited to VGA resolution. However, notebook computers have one minor drawback - the notebook monitors that use `Active-matrix Screens` and produce very sharp images, do not refresh as quickly as the full-size monitors of desktop computers.

When it comes to the computing power, the contemporary notebooks are almost equivalent to the personal desktop computers. Typically, the notebooks computers come with a battery pack which enables you to run them without plugging them in. However, their batteries require recharging at a regular interval. Besides, the laptops have the same CPUs, memory capacity and, disk drives as incase of personal desktop computers. Not surprisingly, the laptop computers or notebooks, as they say it, are much more expensive than their bulky counterparts.

Notebooks or Laptops are manufactured in different designs, sizes, weights and memory capacities. The following are some of the main categories of notebook computers which are produced by some recognized companies:

Ultra-portables:

Ultra-portables are laptops with screen-size less than 12 inches and weight of less than 4 pounds (1.7 kg) These laptops do not normally have full-size keyboards. Primarily, it is the business travelers who need ultra-portables because they are small and light. Ultra-portable are very expensive, have extendable battery, power-saving CPUs and integrated graphics.

Thin & Lights:

This breed of laptops, by and large, weighs between 4 and 6 pounds (1.8 and 2.8 kg) and with a screen-size of 12 to 14 inches. Notebooks of this category are manufactured by Sony, Apple Computer and Dell among others.

Medium-sized Laptops:

Medium-sized laptops usually have a screen-size of 14 to 16 inches and a weight of around 7 to 9 pounds (3 to 4 kg). The length and width of these medium-size laptops are generally decided by their screen-size. However, these medium-sized notebooks have relatively less computing power due to their smaller dimensions and longer battery life.

Desktop Replacement Computers:

This edition of notebook computers is chiefly used in a fixed location and not easily portable due to their heavy weight and bulky size. Their screen-size typically measures from 17 to 20 inches. Moreover, desktop replacement computers have limited battery life barely exceeding 3 hours. This is because the hardware is not optimized for efficient power usage.

Notebooks have really become very popular computer hardware. Its portability and affordable prices seem to be very attractive to business executives, and everyone else, who seem to be on the move all the time. As businesses become more globalized, notebooks become a must-have tool item for everyone who wants to be successful.

Brisbane based White Label Networks is now offering telecommunications and network migration project management as part of its transaction delivery package to banks and financial institutions.

Product Manager for White Label Networks, John Hacking, announced the new bundled strategy in a presentation held in Sydney last week to key stakeholders in the banking transaction community.

Mr Hacking said: “Banks can find it difficult to get the products they need at the right cost.

“Telcos do understand the need to migrate their customers from legacy systems to faster and cheaper IP networks.

“White Label Networks has developed the hardware to migrate banks from a Telstra DDS service that costs around $200 per month, to a DSL service at $120 per month or a wireless GPRS service costing $30 per month.”

The new product package includes their range of Axon legacy to IP protocol converters, the full spectrum of fixed wire and wireless IP network options, device network management plus project management expertise.

“Our focus for the next 2 years is to help banks migrate their fleets of EFTPOS and ATM devices from legacy lines to IP networks.” Mr Hacking said.

Australia’s telecommunications carriers are gradually shutting down their legacy systems, including X.25, Digital Data Services and PAPL (permitted attachment private line).

The banks face the challenge of migrating thousands of devices away from leased lines to new infrastructure in the next two to three years.

“With the move to triple DES, banks will have to upgrade their ATM hardware. This is a perfect opportunity for them to gradually migrate their fleets from legacy networks to IP.”

White Label networks is capitalising on the opportunity to help banks extend the service life of expensive ATM and EFTPOS fleets by supplying protocol converters and new and inexpensive IP services.

Mr Hacking said: “The great thing about IP services is that they are contestable.

“Unlike the traditional leased line market, competition has driven down the costs of DSL and GPRS products.

“Our customers benefit from this price competition and we can now bundle hardware, carriage, network management and project management into one managed service offer and present it on one monthly bill.”

I decided to purchase Windows Vista Home Premium for one reason and that was because of the improved parental controls. I have a problem where my son spends so much time on the computer he has started to lose his social skills. Not to mention the fact that once I go to bed he gets up and starts playing games on the pc until 3 or 4 in the morning.

So the advanced parental controls in Windows Vista really appealed to me, especially the time controls. This is where you can allocate time slots for each account. So as soon as I installed it, the first thing I did was to specify what times he is allowed to access the computer. For this reason alone, the cost of upgrading was well worth it.

Well that's my reason, but what is the rest of Vista like?

Well Vista arrived, via the postman, on Tuesday morning. Once unwrapped, you are presented with a very nicely packaged box. Not sure this level of packaging is required, when you consider you'll probably only use it once or twice before the next upgrade to the Windows family is released.

So after backing up all my critical data, I put the Vista disk into my machine. It started checking my PC and came up with a message that I had to rename a data file and uninstall Nero. So once this was done, I had to start Vista again. This time it passed the checks and I spent the next four hours twiddling my thumbs! It is not a quick process let me tell you that!

However, once the four hour upgrade had been completed, I was ready to check out all the new features!

The way Windows Vista presents itself is absolutely stunning compared to older versions. Two things I really like are the Windows sidebar and the screen switching button (Areo Feature).

The screen switching button is great, as when you have a number of screens open you can press it and Vista shows all the screens in a 3D cascade in the middle of the screen. It looks great and is really useful.

The sidebar is also equally as good. The sidebar is a collection of small info gadgets that are fixed to the side of the screen. On mine I have an analogue clock, a calender, a local weather panel, cpu usage meter, latest $ to £ exchange rates and yahoo news. Other gadgets can be added, and I believe more can be downloaded via the web. This is an excellent utility as I always found it difficult to find out the date when working at the pc under older windows versions.

Another good addition is the ability to review what programmes are in your start menu. As I've had my pc for over a year there were programmes in there which I very rarely use and it is really easy to turn them off using this utility.

The start menu is much slicker than it used to be on XP. On clicking the start button, you are presented with similar information to that of XP but it is organised much better. All the programs in the All Programs menu are now listed sequentially in a scrolling box as opposed to expanding right across your screen as in XP. The usual shortcuts are also there, like control panel, recent files, etc...

Windows Mail is much improved. Essentially Microsoft has taken Outlook and integrated it right into Windows Vista. Mail can be checked at a click of a button. The features of Windows Mail have not been scimped upon, with 99% of Outlooks features available, i.e. calender, tasks, etc...

Windows Explorer has changed quite substantially and it is so easy to find the files you are looking for. As you drill down through the directories, a link to each directory/subdirectory is displayed above the main window so going back on yourself is very much simplified. Also the used/free space on each drive is shown in a bar above the drive letters, much like a progress bar when downloading something off the web. My Documents, My Pictures, My Music are now given a specific short cut link at the top of the Explorer Window, which makes finding your media files really easy. Also Microsoft have dropped the 'My' part of the directory name. Something which always used to bug me!

Security is much improved. When you try to install anything, Windows pops up a question confirming you requested this action. Should help to stop some of those Trojans I guess.

Having used Internet Explorer 7.0 on XP and now on Vista, I can see why I had so many problems with XP. The 7.0 update was designed to integrate into Vista and this is plainly obvious when you use it for the first time. Pages load faster and IE is much more stable in Vista. I used to get 2 or 3 crashes a day in XP.

Other updates include, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, Windows DVD Maker, Windows Meeting Space, Sync Center, Ease of Access Center, and some great new games. I haven't had chance to play with these new additions yet, except a few games of Mahjong, but on the surface they look really good.

The Control Panel is one area where Microsoft have really improved things, everything is now organised more sensibly into various categories, i.e. security, system & maintenance, user accounts, appearance & personalisation, network and internet, etc...

Perhaps the biggest addition is the Media Center. This allows you to view all your pictures and videos either on your desktop or onto a linked TV. You can also watch, pause and record live TV if you have a TV tuner in your machine.

Conclusion

I'm a bit of a gadget freak and love anything new. This is why I bought XP when it came out and now Vista. I have to say though that Vista is without doubt a massive improvement on XP. Everything about the operating system is so much more stable and it's packed with useful utilities and gadgets.

So is it worth the investment? You bet it is!

Running software testing projects is far more difficult than people outside of the software testing arena seem to realize. It is not uncommon for senior management, project management and development teams to adversely pressurize the test team to cut corners in order to meet delivery deadlines. Yes, everyone wants to release a quality product, on time and on budget. Believe it or not even the software testing team want to hit the delivery date, with a product that is on budget. Pushing the software testing team to cut corners is not the answer though.

It is easy to see that everyone involved with a development project wants to achieve the same goal and the same successful release, it is just that the test team are more cautious than most. And for good reason; Software testing is difficult! There is no set process that ensures a successful testing project and there are no software testing tools which guarantee a successful release. Yet despite these clearly obvious facts senior managers, project managers and
development teams always seem to think it is the software test team that can perform some magical act to bring a project back on schedule when project deliver schedules start to slip. Well they can't!

At least they can't if they continue to act professionally, accurately and effectively. The test team are, without question, the last check point prior to a company potentially releasing a product that destroys the companies reputation. That is no small responsibility to take on.

So why is it that it always falls on the software test team to bring in the schedule when projects start slipping? We'll, that isn't a difficult one to answer although there are a couple of reasons, one of which might surprise you. Firstly as testing commonly falls at the end of the development cycle the software testing component is the only area left where it is even possible to make up time. Secondly, and possibly more interestingly, those who have little knowledge of complexities of software testing (for example project mangers) think that a little less testing will only have a little impact on the quality of the product. How wrong that assumption can be!Releases of products with serious defects usually happen because the software test team are forced to cut corners.

The imprecise nature of software testing, and the pressure to cut corners, means it is very difficult to confidently target the test areas such that you minimize the risk of releasing with serious defects left uncovered. The very fact that we leave some areas of our testing incomplete means we have no idea about what we are leaving uncovered. Software testing tools can help but as in many walks of life it all comes down to a trade offs between quality and time, but with software testing the consequences of getting the trades offs wrong can be disastrous.

Spb Phone Suite Review

Spb Phone Suite is designed to enhance your PDA with new features, missing in the phone side of standard Microsoft Windows Mobile 5. Once installed, it'll add phone profiles, missed call notifications, unread SMS notifications, call filtering, reject and reply with SMS, photo-dialing, photos in call log, automatic profile and these are just a few things to name!

To start with, you will discover a powerful Today plug-in where you can see the most frequently used options, such as photo-dialing (called "photo speed dials"), counters for missed calls and SMS messages, profile manager, call filtering mode switcher, and other phone related controls and indicators. You will see all important phone related data at one glance and access any option with just one tap. Fine, isn't it? But let's cut to the chase.

One of the best in Spb Phone Suite and "most wanted" in Windows Mobile functions is profiles. Phone profiles allow customization of ring, alarm tones and volumes (Normal, Silent, Loud), as well as the settings for Bluetooth, WiFi and backlight. As it is with any other option in Spb Phone Suite, profiles can be customized with just a tap or two. There are also automatic profiles that get triggered on some events automatically; this includes such profiles as Headset, Car, Meeting, and Cradle. Now you don't have to worry about triggering the silent mode for scheduled meetings. You can also set a profile to activate for a certain time interval. If you'd like to make your own custom profile in addition to the default ones, the program provide you with this opportunity. Any profile can be changed in a couple of taps from the Today screen.

The photo-dialing option allows you to add a photo avatar to a contact in order to dial a contact with just one tap. To add an avatar, you need to go to the settings dialog or simply tap and hold on the dialer area. Spb Phone Suite lets you use 14 photo-dialing avatars on the Today plug-in. If there are no photos for a contact, you can choose a default avatar from the inbuilt collection.

Other interesting features include "Reject and Send SMS" option, which is useful when you are not able to answer an incoming call. You can drop it in three taps with an SMS message containing a predefined text. Besides, there is "Call Filtering" that will help you create whitelists ("pre-approved" contacts list) and blacklists. With this option in place, your PDA can accept all calls, accept all calls except those from the blacklist, accept only whitelist contacts, or ignore all. Isn't it cool or what? What's more, you can set up wildcards (masks) for numbers from blacklists and whitelists and an ability to change the filter from the Today screen.

If you think the above mentioned features are something your PDA is missing and wish you had them, then you are invited to download an evaluation copy of Spb Phone Suite. You can test it free of charge to see its possibilities and benefits. Download now!

Businesses today have to keep up with the multitude of changes and fluctuations that can happen at any time as well as the cyclical changes in the marketplace. Being able to predict with some degree of accuracy how things will progress at your company, whether it's operational, budgeting or some other scenario, can help you make the right decisions and avoid costly mistakes.

There isn't a business crystal ball that can tell you what to expect, but forecasting software is the next best thing. Today's business forecasting software packages can interpret vast amounts of data and produce valuable reports that forecast trends within your company with amazing accuracy, allowing you to make decisions based on sound business modeling.

Finding the Right Fit

But how do you choose the right forecasting software for your business? There are several key features that you should look for regardless of the industry you are in or how large or small your company. These features include:

* Ease of Use. Some forecasting software is incredibly complex yet easy to use and understand because of its intuitive design. Be sure to try out free betas or demos to see how easy it is to understand and operate. This will reduce training time and ensure that the software is actually used. Good forecasting software should also be compatible with your business operating system. If you company operates exclusively using Lotus Notes internally, your forecasting software needs to seam with Lotus flawlessly.
* Customizing Options. Each business operates on its own particular timeline with its own milestones. Be sure that the forecasting software you select can be adjusted to fit your own calendar. You should also be able to design your own queries and reports based on the information collected.
* "What If" Scenarios. This is essentially the ability to set up a separate but integrated program that you can run with "fictional" information you input so that you can see what the potential outcome would be if you changed something.
* Good Visual Aids. It's never fun to read through reports, whether its business analysis, forecasting or budget reviews. The best forecasting software uses numerous visual aids such as color graphics to make the material clearer, easier to understand and somewhat less boring. Take a look at the system's bar graphs, charts, etc. to see how they look.
* Internet Capability. Large companies should take particular care to make sure their forecasting software is fully Internet capable. That is, it can be used for easy file transfer, will provide email notifications to subscribers when new reports are available and can provide web data storage and retrieval if desired.

Keeping these five keys in mind will help you choose a forecasting software package that your company will use with maximum results. From there, you have only to learn how to use it and be sure that everyone at your company takes as much advantage of it as possible.

At most every website needs a web form somewhere on its pages. It can be a contact form on the contact page, ( by the way it is always a good idea to use a contact form instead of an email address as this will decrease SPAM by stopping spam bots from harvesting your email address ) or a simple feedback form, an order form, survey.

Usually it is easy to create the html form using Dreamwaver or a similar web design software, but making it work requires a little knowledge of php or some other server side scripting language, necessary to process the submission of the form and do something with the submitted data.

One easy way to create web forms is to use one of the online services that specialize in offering web and HTML forms.

For example, Email Me form is a free web service you can use to create web forms within minutes without knowing html or php. An easy to use online wizard will let you create the form in a stepped approach, and at the end you will get a simple HTML source code that you need to copy and paste to your website and the web form will be there and working in no time, sending you an email each time the form is submitted.

The advantages of using an online web form creating service is that they usually offer many features that would be otherwise difficult to implement, such as Captcha images ( to stop spam bots from automatically submitting the form with junk data ), statistics, and many other.

An other way is either to hire a php programmer or to learn yourself a bit of php and get your form working yourself. Basically, each input element in the form has it's own name, and by using php you can get the content of the fields of the HTML form when submitted, validate it and then send them in an email using the php maill() function.

Video Conferencing: Convenience and Efficiency in One

Video Conferencing: Convenience and Efficiency in One
By Nahshon Roberts

There are times wherein your physical attendance is badly needed. However, there's simply no way for you to be present at the specified time and location of the meeting. So what do you do? You call the person up to tell him you cannot make it. The conference is significant, yet it's improbable for you to be in two areas simultaneously. But that predicament can now be conveniently solved with the use of video conferencing facilities. But what's videoconferencing? Videoconferencing is an interactive association between two or several groups from a variety of areas using the internet, video, and audio technology in real-time.
In order for a video conference to function, basic components like audio as well as video inputs (mics, cams, webcams), audio as well as video outputs (speakers, headphones, computer monitors, projectors), and the main control system that can permit data transfer must be there. Still for the meeting or conference to be more lively and interactive, optional applications as in instant messaging, Flash animation, Java scripts, and much more, could permit joiners to express themselves not just verbally, but they will be able to interchange data and other relevant information by sharing files, view slide shows, share videos, and use a universal whiteboard where every attendee could draw or scribble on. Most videoconferencing technologies have all these equipments as well as applications and much more depending on your necessity.
There are countless videoconferencing companies that offer videoconferencing options patterned to your necessity. They could coordinate a forum involving a group of three to ten people to a conference of up to more than a hundred attendees in a variety of geographic locations. Prices could range depending on the equipments, software, and applications utilized. You can either choose a uniform cost conference calling service or a per-minute calling program. But you could always start your own videoconference when you have the fundamental devices for video conferencing.
The teleconferencing industry has become a famous trade because organizations and agencies huge and small, or even private individuals, are now understanding the benefits of video conferencing. The organization could save a couple of vital travel time as well as travel charges through this technology. And it is very convenient for those who work primarily in the house. Yet not only is this useful to business people and offices. The general public can find nice use of this technology for quicker communication along with interchange of data by public videoconference rooms which has presently become readily accessible for those who don't have the right software in the house.
By the use of videoconferencing technology, things have become less complicated as well as easier to fulfill. For a professor, for instance, rather than getting a plane ride from California to a university in New York to participate in a meeting, he could use video phones to give his speech or lecture to a group of students live and still be able to answer their queries without having to postpone his next class. For vivid reasons, this process is now being widely recognized. Even family and pals may presently plan Internet reunions. But physical attendance might never take over technology no matter how advanced it is.

What's So Great About HDTV Ready LCD?

What's So Great About HDTV Ready LCD?
By Muna wa Wanjiru

so your old box just won't cut it. You might as well be watching public access or just using the antennae. Really, hdtv ready lcd is almost becoming a complete essential nowadays according to many popular studies. You just cant get too good of a resolution, and hdtv ready lcd is the best on the market at the current time.
Of course, there is always a new thing. Before hdtv ready lcd, there was a time when flat panel itself was new and very chic. Before that, just having a high resolution CRT was enough and before that - well, no reason to keep going back ad infinitem. The important thing is, to keep up with the joneses, you must have a hdtv ready lcd, or else you cant even get high definition tv.
And whats so great about high definition tv? For one thing, many many channels - more than your basic cable deffinitely. But all in all, it's not that great. It really is hard to see which is better, high definition tv, or standard satellite tv, or even the new special cable with hundreds of channels. I mean, we keep having this push for bigger and better, but who has the time to watch hundreds of channels. You can only make so much use of your hdtv ready lcd. But then again, having an lcd television is useful in itself.
I mean, it will last longer than your crt system that you have now, and besides that, it will produce a better image. It also uses much less power than a standard cathode ray tube, and because of this, it is much nicer to use and preserve your electricity bill at some kind of a reasonable rate. Who wants to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars just to use their big screen tv. I know that I don't, and I'm sure that you don't too. And besides that, many scientists think that the flat panel of a hdtv ready lcd is easier on the eyes than the rounded panel popular on other kinds of tvs. Its really a good deal all around, so you can hardly go wrong if you think about it. I bought a hdtv ready lcd just the other week, and I'm sure happy that I did!

LCD Plasma Television Appear Like Works of Art Hanging in Your Living Room

LCD Plasma Television Appear Like Works of Art Hanging in Your Living Room
By Muna wa Wanjiru

If you've been shopping around for a television set in the recent past, chances are that you've been astounded by the wide array of television sets available. I'm not referring to the number of manufacturers. Apart from the brand names most of us have grown up with, most state of the art television sets today come from the Asian region, from companies in China, Korea and Japan. What I am referring to however, is the new technologies that are available. If on the one hand there are still cathode ray tube conventional televisions, on the other hand, there are innovative display systems like liquid crystal display televisions and even what is known as plasma televisions.
In the tried and tested conventional televisions that most of us have grown up with, the technology used is known as the cathode ray tube technology. A cathode gun fires electrons, which, when charged and excited, tend to form an image on a glass screen. These images form as pixels in the three basic colors, which when combined can produce millions of colors. While the technology itself has been fine tuned and developed through the ages to give us great television monitors, there are certain limitations to what the conventional cathode ray tube television can do.
For one thing, being built of glass, the screen of the cathode ray tube or conventional television has a size limitation. Most conventional televisions which use the cathode ray tube technology are less than 42 inches in size. This size is not the height or width of the television, but the diagonal distance between one end and the other. So, the biggest conventional television you can have is around 42 inches. Conventional televisions are bulky, restricted in image size and confined to the limitations of the box they are built in. This makes them big, and in some cases impossible to fit into your living room.
This is where newer display technologies have resulted in better, modern televisions like the plasma television. In a plasma television, the older cathode ray tube technology is left behind in favor of an atomic technology. Our ability to manipulate and control the behavior of atomic particles has also enables us to enhance our viewing experience. This is the technology that a plasma television uses. A plasma, is a gas that contains freely flowing ions and electrons. When an electric charge is passed through this plasma, photons are released, which then provide illumination. The rest of the technology in plasma televisions is concentrated on using this illumination to create the three primary colors and to display them as images. Just as the cathode ray tube televisions use different intensities of particles to produce differing colors, the plasma television also varies the intensity of the illumination to produce color changes. Which is why, while using a plasma television, more numbers of colors can be seen.
The plasma television removes or negates most of the drawbacks of the conventional television. For one thing, size is no longer a restriction, as the bulky cathode ray tube has been done away with. For another, bulky boxes are not required and the plasma television can be as thin as you could have imagined it. Most plasma televisions nowadays appear more or less like works of art hanging in your living room. So adopt the plasma television today and see how innovations in display have enhanced the quality of our entertainment!

Save Money And Time With a High Speed Cable Connection

Save Money And Time With a High Speed Cable Connection
By Muna wa Wanjiru

I was glad to have an opportunity to work while babysitting. I have a high speed cable connection to my computer and my sister has a dial up connection. I never realized how important a high speed cable connection to the Internet was until I did not have it. I did not realize how much slower a dial up connection in comparison.
I quickly became very frustrated with the slow connection. At first, I thought that there was something wrong with my sister's computer and I was worried that I had unwittingly caused the problem. After checking and rechecking the computer, I found that there was nothing wrong with it aside from the computer not having a high speed cable connection.
Even though I was relieved that her computer was fine, I was still worried that I couldn't get everything done that I had set out to do with the slower connection. There was a lot of research involved in my assignment and I just could not bear to think of waiting and waiting for websites to download just to find that I couldn't use the information. I didn't realize how spoiled I was with my high speed cable connection to the Internet but I soon found out.
I have no patience. This is why I opted to choose a high speed cable connection for my computer. I find myself clicking and clicking as sites are downloaded. This only makes things worse. The slower Internet connection is simply maddening for me. I am too busy thinking about my next step and I haven't even taken the first step. By the time the site downloads, my mind is on to other things. I need a high speed cable connection just to maintain my sanity.
The other obstacle I came across with the slower dial up connection was that I could not use the telephone while I was using the Internet. This is just unthinkable. I can think of dozens of times that I was on the phone while I was using my computer. My high speed Internet connection does not interfere with my phone service.
My sister uses call wave. Call wave alerts you when you have a phone call. It also takes messages. It also costs money. I figure that for the price of the answering service, my sister can afford a high speed cable connection for her computer. She works from home three days each week and her work requires her to be available to answer the phone. With a high speed cable connection, she could use her computer while she is working.
I still haven't talked my sister into getting a high speed cable connection, but I'm going to keep trying to persuade her. I do have a stake in this. I can save a lot of time and I can save myself a lot of frustration if she has a high speed Internet connection while I'm babysitting. Otherwise, my niece will just have to come to my house

Data structures: VB and VBA offer two options: arrays and collections

Data structures: VB and VBA offer two options: arrays and collections
by Mike Tuersley

This month is devoted to data structures. This isn't a computer science course, so let's define a data structure as a data holder--something that holds whatever data we need while our program executes. Visual BASIC and VBA use two basic data structures: the array and the collection. This month when I say VB, I also mean VBA.

ARRAYS

Most VB programmers are familiar with the array (figure 1). An array can be single or multidimensional, which means it can have rows and columns. While the array is the most commonly used data structure, it's not the best choice for at least two reasons. The first is data access. To find something within the array, you have to know exactly what you want. If you knew that, you wouldn't have to look, would you? To search for an item, you must iterate through the array.
[FIGURE 1 OMITTED]

The second reason is that the array must be dimensioned to a known limit. Once set, it's not easy to add an item after that limit is reached. For example, if you have a list of four people, you can't add a fifth person until you resize the array using ReDim or ReDim Preserve. ReDim resizes the array and clears any existing values, while ReDim Preserve resizes and keeps any existing values. Also, the upper limit of the array can't be a dynamic variable. An exception to the dimensioning rule is using an array with a command such as Split (figure 2).

[FIGURE 2 OMITTED]

If the array isn't dimensioned, the Split command dimensions and fills the array on the fly. Arrays are zero-based in VBA (and in VB, although you can use the Option Base statement to change it). In most cases, the array is limited to a single data type.

COLLECTIONS

A collection (figure 3) is usually a better choice for a data structure. All AutoCAD programmers have used collections whether they realize it or not, because AutoCAD uses them. Layers and blocks are two of the most commonly accessed collections within AutoCAD. A collection differs from an array in that it isn't dimensioned, it is one-based, and it can hold multiple data types.

[FIGURE 3 OMITTED]

Once the collection variable is declared, it must be set using the New command. Though sometimes the New command is used within the declaration, it's best to avoid doing it that way. Each new item should be specifically added using the collection object's Add method. Then when an item is needed, it's accessed using the collection object's Item method.

There are two main reasons to choose a collection over an array. The first is that you can add as many items as you need without worrying about a limit. The second is data access speed. When finding an item in the collection, the program doesn't have to iterate through each item. If you use the optional keyword when adding items, the program can go directly to the desired item.

In addition to the keyword, two more optional parameters--Before and After--let you add items to the collection in specific places. You can also use Count to return the number of items that the collection currently holds and Delete to remove items from the collection. If you start Delete, all items located after the deleted item are renumbered so there is not an empty position.

One problem with both an array and a collection is that neither includes data validation. For example, say you want only unique values stored within your array or collection. With an array, you can write a function that iterates all existing items and compares the new value to each one. If a match is found, the function does nothing. Otherwise it adds the item to the array.

With a collection, you can use keywords and trap the error encountered when a duplicate keyword is added (figure 4). Though using an On Error Resume Next statement is discouraged, it can work to your advantage here. You could also test for the error number 457, then clear and resume only if it's that number. On any other error, do whatever needs to be done.

KICK IT UP A NOTCH

Kick your applications up by using a Microsoft Scripting Dictionary as your data structure. To access the Dictionary object, make a reference to the Microsoft Scripting Runtime and then use it, as follows:

Dim sdGuys As Dictionary

Set sdGuys = New Dictionary

From here, the dictionary is just like a collection on steroids. It has more methods and properties such as Exist, which checks for a duplicate entry without using our error trick for the collection or writing an entire function as we did for the array.

Conceptualizing a Website

Conceptualizing a Website

By: Maneet Puri

Every business these days wants to have a presence on WWW; the main objective is to be able to target the global market and creating a profile of the company, which can be accessed by anyone from anywhere! This is opened many opportunities for the business involved in designing & development of websites, and depending upon the size of the business processes and approach for deploying a web based application changes. Which is very fair because everyone has his/her style of working and making deliverables, if the process & approach does not include all the basic steps of a software development life cycle it leads to the problems like – deadlines are not met and the scope of the work changes as the work progresses.

The clients might not be tech & internet savvy so they are not able to visualize how their site will look like and when they get the first demo of the application that is being developed for them it acts as the food for thought. They then try to relate it with what they are looking at and there business model. As a result they expect some changes to be done to the features or the style in which the information is being displayed on the website. Which results into requirement of additional time and effort for accommodating such things, and leads to the above mentioned problems.

There is a believe that anyone can start delivering web based services and can keep the cost low by not hiring people who actually are skilled to accomplish this task. The thought originates a company with the problems of delivering work which is not quality and ending up with unhappy customers.

Why this happens?

The root of the problem is conceptualization – Providers do not well conceptualize the requirement and get started with the production. This way the client does not get anything to see but they directly see the first demo. Providers should conceptualize the requirement and should compile documents like -

a) High Level Features / Pages document – The purpose of this document is to list the pages / features that will be designed / developed for the website. This is of great assistance to the clients to know what will be delivered and how it will be functioning.

b) Wire frames – This will be a skeleton of the complete website, which helps clients in visualizing how the pages of there website will look like.

c) Approach & Milestones – The purpose of this document is to inform client the order in which the production will happen and what are milestones of this development process, a good scheduling of work may even have specific delivery dates with each milestone.

Apart from the benefits of these documents to the client there are certain benefits of these documents to the provider and its team: -

a) Exact estimation of the effort that will be required, which will assist them in evaluating the exact cost for this effort
b) Complete understanding of the requirement before the production has started
c) Being on the same page as client while developing pages of the website
d) Meeting the timelines
e) Ensuring the deliverable is a quality product
f) Most Important – You will have a happy & a satisfied client

To conclude I would say providers should ensure that they do conceptualization of every web based project they work on and the buyers should ask questions to providers ‘How they will conceptualize my project and what will be the approach?’

Finding a Custom Software Idea that Will Make Money

Finding a Custom Software Idea that Will Make Money
By: S. ReevesMorris

Custom software is the latest trend in businesses on the internet. Because different customers have different needs in their software, this business opportunity allows customers to have a say in what they are buying before they even buy it. By talking about their personal needs and allowing someone to build a software program around those needs, everyone benefits. But here’s how businesses can find that custom software idea that will make them profitable.

Unique product – To create interest from customers, you need to offer then a unique product. In the true definition of custom software development, you are already creating a personalized product, but in order to show this to prospective customers, you need to be able to show them EXACTLY what you can create for them. Try to give customers lists of the different options they have when you put together a package for them. This will clearly define the possibilities for them when they buy your software.

Addresses specific need – Each of the options that you offer for your custom software needs to directly address a specific need. And to do this, you will need to go out and find what customers want from their software. From having something to organize their files to having a way to store their billing invoices, you need to come up with the various needs that businesses want to address with your product. In doing so, you will be able to list the needs that you
can fulfill easily and create systems of software that are generalized for common needs.

Who you can help – From businesses to small start-ups, your custom software can be built for all kinds of organizations. And the more people you can help, the more likely you will be able to generate income. To help you organize your target audiences, try to create basic custom software programs that will enhance certain groups – i.e. businesses, personal organization, etc. This way, you will have some programs already available for purchase without needing to do any additional work to customize the program. For example, you may want to create a tax preparation package or a self-employed billing package. Some customers may not know exactly what they need, but when you create packages, you can give them options to consider.

Where you can find help to create your product – Of course, creating the product itself is much different from coming up with the idea to sell custom software. But even if you don’t have any prior training, you can talk with freelance software developers to help you create the programs you need. You can outsource your software development quite easily as well, by looking online for companies that are designed to do just that.

By building a custom software development Company, you will be able to address a wide number of customer needs by personalizing their experiences to suit their situation. Instead of selling one particular software package, you can sell dozens that are suited for a wider range of customers – thus a wider range of opportunities for profit.
